By Web Desk TWA ______ The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has highlighted a report issued today by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, covering cases of detention from October 7, 2023, to June 30, 2024. The report confirms an increase in systematic arbitrary detentions, including administrative detentions, carried out by Israeli occupation forces since October 7, 2023. These detentions have occurred in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and in the Gaza Strip, resulting in 9,440 Palestinian prisoners detained by Israeli authorities as of June 30, 2024. This number includes 3,377 cases of administrative detention involving women, children, medical personnel, journalists, patients, UNRWA staff, and human rights defenders. The Ministry emphasized the inhumane and degrading treatment faced by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons, including systematic torture and severe beatings leading to death. These actions necessitate urgent international intervention to compel Israel, the occupying power, to cease its blatant violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws. The Ministry appreciated the report’s conclusions that arresting Palestinians and depriving them of their freedom without knowing their fate or whereabouts constitutes the crime of enforced disappearance. The Ministry noted that the policy of arbitrary detention is part of broader crimes and violations against the rights of the Palestinian people, including genocide, collective punishment, and ethnic cleansing. It called on the Office of the High Commissioner to continue documenting these violations and urged all countries and international institutions to implement the report's recommendations. This includes compelling Israel, the illegal occupying power, to release arbitrarily detained prisoners, stop serious violations of international law, hold perpetrators accountable, uncover the fate of forcibly disappeared prisoners, allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit prisoners, and permit the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to access occupied Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem, and provide reparations for victims of these violations.
